I am held behind cold steel bars across the county line
that I myself did form while serving out my time
and the warden, I am he, fine tooth comb, polished shoes, size 10 feet
with a gun to my head, he smokes a cigarette between clenched teeth
there is no rest for the weary, no rest for me
I have often dreamed of an escape train rolling through the country
retired from my chains, my wife and kids along to ride with me
my family would sing, “Breathe deep the meadow flowers of summer”
it would help me believe there’s more to the world than making money
but alas, I must wake from every sleep
there is no rest for the weary, no rest for me
My anger will not bleed
I’m 4 feet taller than my surroundings
bird-eye view, mind at ease
is merely a matter of rising up to leave
and find some rest for the weary, some rest for me
